Air Handlers

Air handlers, when paired with a heat pump or quality air conditioner, can significantly improve indoor air quality – and the respiratory health of you and your family!

Air handlers are the heart of an air conditioning system. Just as a heart pumps blood throughout the body, an air handler delivers fresh air throughout a home.

Air handlers are typically located in attics, basements, and closets. These devices not only transfer cool or warm air to the correct spaces, but they also constantly filter the air in your home – all while reducing airborne allergens and excessive humidity indoors!

These highly innovative heating and cooling HVAC devices are sometimes equipped with adjustable-speed technology, allowing them to consistently maintain your desired temperature at a reduced utility cost.

In fact, air handlers that are connected to a smart thermostat can help you save tremendously on energy fees. A smart or programmable thermostat can learn your heating and cooling patterns, and intuitively adjust your residence’s temperature as needed to help decrease your monthly electricity consumption.

Essential Parts Of An Air Handler

Air handlers utilize various intricate components to circulate warm and cool air throughout your home.

The blower, or fan, of an air handler takes unconditioned air from your home and transports the newly conditioned air back into your household.

However, before the conditioned air is sent out, air filters inside air handlers are designed to remove particulates from the air, including dust, dirt, and pollen. This filtering process protects your evaporator coil and internal components from damage, all while improving the indoor air quality (IAQ) of the home.

These internal components are highly essential. Air handlers rely on a component called the evaporator coil to cool your home’s air. Refrigerant flows through the evaporator coil, making it extremely cold. As warm air is blown over the evaporator coil, the refrigerant within absorbs any lingering heat from the air. This process creates cool, refreshing air that is then pushed into your home.

When heating the air, an air handler uses electric heating strips – rather than the evaporator coil – to heat the air. However, not all air handlers have the capacity to both heat and cool. Check beforehand if your air handler has this ability, or if you need to purchase an additional furnace.

After all of this is done, the conditioned air is distributed into the home through dampers and ductwork. The final result is fresh, comfortable air that is perfectly set at your desired temperature.
